Jo Crotty launches Warrington campaign to reform government

7.44.08pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 1st Jun 2009

Lib Dem Prospective MP for Warrington South Jo Crotty has launched a campaign in Warrington that backs plans to radically reform government in Westminster. "The Liberal Democrat plan to completely overall Westminster in 100 days is the best way - the only way - to ensure that people here in Warrington are given back the power to make real decisions about their government," said Dr Crotty.

"What the Liberal Democrats are proposing is a radical change to the way Westminster operates. Labour and the Conservatives have had decades of power between them to make government more accountable and it has only gotten worse.

"It is time for the voters to take back power from Westminster politicians and fight for the kind of political system that works for them."

The Liberal Democrats launched a plan of sweeping change in response to the MPs expenses scandal that has rocked the two biggest parties in the House of Commons over the past month.

"The Liberal Democrat plan is clear and comprehensive," continued Dr Crotty. "It details how we can achieve not just real reform on MPs expenses, but also a recall power to let voters sack their MP, abolishing the unelected House of Lords, electoral reform, party funding reform so we can make sure money does not rule politics, and reducing the executive powers of the Prime Minister and his or her cabinet.

"Nick Clegg has detailed a clear timetable of how this can be done in 100 days, and I am backing Nick in his demands that the House of Commons will sit through the summer recess to accomplish these vital goals.

"I strongly urge Warrington's MPs to join me in backing these plans to give power back to the voters."
